Morning Pages

I have made a new resolution to start doing Morning Pages again. Morning Pages are the brainchild of Julia Cameron in her book The Artist’s Way. Every day you get up (a little extra early) and write in a 10×8 inch notebook whatever is in your head. You write 3 pages and stop. You don’t think about it or try to make it RIGHT. You just write it down. It is really a form of meditation. And I find it works.

Morning Pages (MP’S) are brain dump. You get all your fears and anger and sadness and happy thoughts and things you are proud of or things you need to do that day down on paper and OUT of your head. It gets it out of the way so you can do your morning work. Think of it like going for a walk or jog or just having an early cup of coffee. It wakes you up and gets you going.  I like to have a piece of paper next to me while I do them to write down the things I want to do that day. The MP’s help me think of them. Putting them on a piece of paper makes me remember them but not worry about them NOW. They are for AFTER I finish the MP’s.

It may sound very New Agey and it can be. But business executives are getting into it:  https://www.forbes.com/sites/janinemaclachlan/2021/09/16/why-leaders-should-write-morning-pages/?sh=1d777f613aeb

Just start. Any day you want. Set an intention to get up about 30 minutes early and just do them. This is not good writing; it is even not “free writing”. As I said, it is brain dump. Afterward you will be much more able to face your day.

As they say, don’t knock it until you try it
